Tooting His Horn
To a younger Jim Seidel - a high school band director and professional musician - church was a location he attended to play his trumpet in exchange for a stipend. Although he attended church with his mother on occasion, it was a duty rather than a spiritual need.
Upon meeting and marrying his wife Wendy, she encouraged him to attend her Lutheran church more regularly. Through the influence of two pastors, he learned to see the church as a place of contemplation, serenity, and a place to give back to others.
In January of 2019, the Seidels moved to Myrtle Beach and began looking for a new congregation home. Because of Jim’s strong connection to music and his desire for contemplation and service, he sought a place with a spiritual connection with the pastor and a church home offering a strong music program.
St. Philip Lutheran was the first stop based mainly on proximity to their house. Upon entering the church, they were greeted by several people. Jim was pleasantly surprised the organist was extremely talented. When Pastor Jason gave his sermon, Jim found it to be one he could relate to and learn from. Tuesday after their first service, Pastor Jason visited the couple in their home. His friendliness and welcoming demeanor made the Seidels feel they had successfully found their church in Myrtle Beach. Every Sunday more and more congregational members greeted the Seidels making them feel like part of a bigger family. Jim discovered that Pastor Jason and Arthur, the organist, work together to make the service a cohesive experience. This is something Jim never experienced in prior churches. As a musician, this is very important to him.
“Since joining St. Philip Lutheran,” Jim said, “I am part of the congregation in ways beyond my music. I like being part of something meaningful.” Besides sharing his musical talents with his trumpet and as a part of the handbell choir, Jim serves on Council, and he is active in the Sanctuary Renovation and Organ Committees. He participates each month in feeding the homeless. He has come a long way from tooting his horn to earn a few bucks and no connection to the meaningful side of the church.
Your generosity to St. Philip makes it possible for us to provide a strong musical program connected to deep spiritual fulfillment through worship and community. Thank you for your generosity.
