Sausage Gravy and Pancakes

“There’s one thing about Lutherans - they like to eat!”

Throughout Armando “AJ” Perez’s many life adventures, cooking food has always brought him joy. Growing up in Cuba, he soaked up culinary wisdom from his mother. And during his time as a tank commander for the US Army in Germany, his taste buds went on a world tour. “I wish I could’ve just been the cook!” AJ joked.

After retiring, AJ and Regine settled in Myrtle Beach, joining a Lutheran church right away. But after a local move and the COVID-19 pandemic, AJ and Regine were looking for a new Lutheran church in which to worship, to find friends, and to get involved. After visiting many churches, they still hadn't found that sense of belonging they were craving.

Then they attended St. Philip. From the get-go, AJ and Regine felt like they'd found a second home. The warm welcome, the sermons, the music, the children - it was a wonderful recipe. Oh, and let's not forget about the Fellowship Hall and the kitchen - two spots that caught AJ’s attention! Shortly thereafter, AJ attended a Men’s Breakfast for fellowship and friendship. At the end of that first breakfast, AJ told everyone, “Next time, I’m bringing the sausage gravy and pancakes!”

“The Lord has been so good to us. Our prayers have come through in the ways that we have been blessed,” AJ shared. “I’ve always got to be involved in something. I like to feed people.”

Nowadays, you can spot AJ every month, flipping pancakes for all to enjoy. At St. Philip, AJ has found friends, a way to be involved, and a worshiping community that supports him. Yes, Lutherans sure do have an appetite, because sharing a meal is more than just food - it's how friendships are made.
